How does it work?

Sprint events are run in three separate heats for each age group or skill level along a 450m course at the BMSP proving grounds (shown above). Prior to the start, participants from each age group or skill level are pre-seeded into groups of 8 or less. Participants race their first heat, then wait as the other groups complete their first heats, there is a short break, then we proceed to the second heat, and so on until the third and final heat.

Scoring

Upon finishing each heat, each rider is given points based on their finish position. Points are allocated downward 1st - 8pts, 2nd 7pts, 3rd 6pts, 4th 5pts, 5th 4pts, 6th 3pts, 7th 2pts, 8th 1pt. Final results are ranked based on total points earned. In the event of multiple groups per category/age group, participants that progress to the final heat will always be ranked higher regardless of points earned in the first two heats.

Heats & Seeding

First round of seeding is done at random. In the event there are more than 8 riders in one particular category or age group, the total number of riders will be split into two or more groups to allow for the most even number of heats. Ie: 12 racers = two separate heats of 6. 20 racers = two separate heats of 7, one heat of 6. In the scenarios above with multiple heats per category/age group, elimination format will take place with the last 2-3 finishers of each group not progressing to the next round (dependent on number of participants). Regardless of number of groups per category/age group, riders will be eliminated until the final round which will only be one group with a maximum of 8 riders. Race officials reserve the right to re-seed groups if necessary.
